r Accelerated Reader Program
Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s):
Reading
is one of the great joys of life and one of the most important
skills students learn in school. Research proves that students
who read well do better in all school subjects. But how do you
turn your children into enthusiastic readers? Accelerated
Reader® and STAR Reading™ help to motivate, monitor, and guide
critical reading practice so every student achieves maximum
reading growth. Here at Askew, we use both of these
programs.
Accelerated
Reader is a computerized learning system that assesses
literature-based reading practice and comprehension. Students
self-select books within their current reading level, determined
by the STAR Reading program and/or their classroom teacher, read
the book and then take a computerized comprehension quiz.
Spanish and English books and quizzes are available. The
questions are very detailed, so the child needs to have read the
book very recently in order to do well on the
quiz. Once a quiz has been taken, the computer will not
allow the student to take it again, including the next school
year. The student’s “Reading Record” is kept year after
year.
Currently, we
have over 7,400 quizzes available to your child, at reading
levels ranging from kindergarten all the way up to 9th
grade. A list of the quizzes are available below under the
Quizzes section or consult with your child’s
reading teacher. Your child(ren) can select books from the
school’s library or our neighborhood libraries, Kendall Branch
and Robinson-Westchase Branch. Both of these neighborhood
public libraries will have the “Askew
AR”
list for you to reference.
To participate in this
program your child must be able to consistently read
independently at or above a 1st grade reading
level.
