Welcome back to Askew Elementary School! The second grade team is very excited to begin a new year. When teachers, parents, students and the administrators work together, all students will learn at high levels. On our webpage at Askew.org, you will have access to high frequency words, important policies, teachers’ email addresses, as well as some special dates for upcoming projects and field trips. Thank you, in advance, for your support. We know that we will have an awesome year!

 Conduct/ Homework

All second graders will receive a folder that is sent home daily and should be returned the following school day. Please look for: homework, a weekly conduct calendar that should be signed, a homework tablet containing spelling words, notes and important handouts from the office. Students will complete and write down their homework assignments in the tablet. Students who do not complete homework will lose part of recess. Students will have to study High Frequency Words and do Spelling and Math homework everyday. They should also read for a minimum of 20 minutes daily. Spelling tests and high frequency word tests are administered every Friday. Please make sure to look through the folder nightly, and sign the necessary items in the folder. On the weekly conduct calendar, E= excellent, S= satisfactory, P= poor, and U= unacceptable. Students with poor conduct may not be able to attend field trips, parties and assemblies.

Conduct Policy

If a student chooses to break a rule, he/she will receive TWO verbal warnings before a conduct cut is given.

Following the two warnings, conduct cuts will be given using the following scale:

Classroom Rules

School Rules

1. Listen when others are talking.
2. Follow directions.
3. Keep hands, feet, and other objects to yourself.
4. Work quietly and do not disturb others.
5. Show respect for school and personal property.
6. Work and play in a safe manner.
1. Follow all adults’ directions without argument.
2. Observe silence in teaching areas.
3. Cooperate with others.
4. Use appropriate language.
5. Show respect for yourself and others.

To encourage students to follow the rules, I will reinforce appropriate behavior with rewards, stickers, certificates, credits for positive behavior, and member of the “E” Club.

E – 0 conduct cuts
S – 1 conduct cut (loss of 5 minutes recess)
P – 2 conduct cuts (loss of 7 minutes recess)
U – 3 or more conduct cuts (loss of 10 minutes recess, parent contact, and possible visit to administrator)

***A conduct sheet will be sent home in the Tuesday folder. Please sign the conduct sheet every Tuesday to be returned to school the next day.

 Attendance

Students are expected to attend school unless they have a fever. Please don’t send children to school with a fever. They will be too sick to learn, and others might get sick. Also, please don’t keep students home if they are not sick. They have a lot to learn, and we don’t want any students to miss anything. When a student is absent, it is important to send a written excuse within three days of the absence. If a frequently absent student does not submit written excuses, the computer will automatically retain (fail) him/ her. We don’t want this to happen to anyone. Tardiness- It is imperative that every student is on time everyday. Breakfast is served until 8:00am and school begins promptly at 8:15am. This year, tardiness will be tabulated everyday. Students arriving after 8:15 must go directly to the office to receive a tardy slip.

 Conferences

If you have a question or concern, please feel free to call 281-368-2100 or email your child’s teacher. If we are in a meeting, please leave your phone number and we will get back with you within one business day from the time the message was received. The best time to call is between 8:35 and 9:05pm because this is our designated conference period. If you feel that an “in person” meeting would work better, call in or email a conference request. If you feel that an email response will suffice, we will respond within one business day- unless the servers are down. You can also send a written note (in the folder) requesting a conference. Teachers are not permitted to hold parent/ teacher conferences during instruction time- due to the fact that our students need our undivided attention. We appreciate your understanding.

 Birthdays/ School Visits

Parents may bring cupcakes for the class during lunch only. Please make sure that you check in at the front office every time you visit. If you need to pick up your child early, please tell the clerk or secretary in the front office. They will call your child to the office to meet you. Thanks for your cooperation.
