Universal Concepts

For the 2007-2008 school year, Askew’s Vanguard program selected differing universal concepts depending on the grade level. These universal concepts allow for an interdisciplinary approach to learning and guide the Scholars and Knowledge framework.

Kindergarten – Patterns

Patterns have segments that are repeated.

·        Patterns allow for prediction.

·        Patterns have an internal order.

·        Patterns are enablers.

Grade One - Community

·        Communities may be natural or constructed.

·        Communities are purposeful.

·        Communities can change over time.

·        Communities follow rules.

Grade Two – Relationships

·        Everything is related in some way.

·        All relationships are purposeful.

·        Relationships change over time.

Grade Three – Change

·        Change generates additional change.

·        Change can be either positive / negative.

·        Change is inevitable.

·        Change is necessary for growth.

·        Change can be evolutionary or revolutionary.

Grade Four and Five – Exploration

·        Exploration confronts the unknown.

·        Exploration requires recognized purpose.

·        Exploration may result in new findings or confirm old findings.
